About Us

Picture
The group began in 2014 or so (see history below) when several people from Iowa City traveled to the Village Fire singing festival in Decorah, Iowa, to learn from song leaders like Liz Rog. Liz, strong change force and advocate for the power of song, planted some seeds with those early Iowa City singers. She also came and led several workshops in Iowa City, and a group coalesced around this style of singing.

Community Sing relies on the oral tradition, is generally a capella, and focuses on themes of love, healing, empowerment, justice, the beauty of nature, and our connection to the earth. We recognize that singing is a spiritual practice in its own right. As we blend our voices, we are strengthening bonds of community and commitment to each other and the earth. It's also great fun!

Most songs are written for the movement by participants and song leaders, and many people in the Iowa City group have contributed to this growing canon. Community Sing is an international movement, with song groups active across the globe.

Out of this larger group, several smaller groups have sprung up to address specific needs:

Heartsong offers singing for people who are in times of transition, who may have a need for healing or support or simply sharing of joy.

The Iowa City Hospital Sing has met for several years (temporarily discontinued during Covid) at the Stead Children’s Hospital to sing to and with patients and staff.

Voices for Change sings in support of social justice events and movements.

A Songsmithing Workshop has met intermittently, as a forum to exchange song writing ideas and help each other develop original material.

Origin of Iowa City Community Sing

Judi Clinton:  I think I went up the second year of Village Fire.  Adina & Marie Garry were also there & we invited Liz to come to Iowa City that September. Susan Salterberg & I went to the smaller gathering in Minnesota  & Adina & Andrew were there. It was so cold in September that we almost left early.

Adina Levitt: Andrew (Levitt) and I attended our first Village Fire in 2014. That was the second time Village Fire happened in that form (see the long history of Village Fire on their website about Musicland being the original beginning). The reason we heard about it was because we were looking for a breeder who had labradoodles and we were up in the Decorah area meeting a breeder before our dog was even born to check her out. We walked around town and kept seeing these posters for Village Fire, it looked really fun and so we decided to come back to attend. Later we did get our dog, Kaya, from that breeder, and so I actually feel that Kaya's spirit led us to Village Fire.

Once at Village Fire, with a really nice warm welcome from Liz at the Welcome Table, when she heard that we were from Iowa City, her natural instinct was to hook us up with other people from the Iowa City area. She hooked us up with Marie Garry and Judi Clinton (I don't think we met there, I think we met once we came home). Together we decided to create a local group, I think it actually was Andrew's idea. Liz offered to come to our community in Fall 2014 to help get the singing going and to inspire people to come together and organize."
